A Fall Football Weekend in NOLA

I'm finalllly getting to my NOLA recap, two weeks later. Since I've already been and blogged about New Orleans about four times, I'll keep the content short and mostly provide a photodump of my recent trip to the Crescent City.

This time around I didn't plan so it was a very go-with-the-flow vacay. The reason for the trip was a Saints game (becuase if you didn't know, I'm kinda a superfan) and while they lost unfortunately, it was still great being in the Superdome surrounded by other fans. Plus it didn't hurt that our seats were 9th row - which, somehow, are the SAME EXACT SEATS as I sat in last year. What are the chances of that?!

In addition to the game, there was a lot of cajun food, beer, and sightseeing. Here's what I got up to...

Best photo of the trip? My unintentional pose-off with a security guard. I think his form gives him the edge. Damn!

Traveling to New Orleans

Before I jump into NOLA I wanted to apologize again for being so MIA. If by chance you don't know my situation, the deets are that I'm commuting five hours daily for my new job. I literally have about two spare hours a day and have been using that time to eat and prep for the next day. I've also been staying at hotels to eliminate my drive once or twice a week. As a result I haven't visited blogs or posted much. I'll probably just stick to Monday Morning Gossip posts until I can catch up - on life in general. Please bear with me. I'M SUPER SORRY!

I'm not currently at work, but instead in New Orleans to see the Saints play a home game. Second year in a row! I've been to the city twice (I think I've seen and done all of the major things) and I'm not doing the planning on this trip so I'm not exactly sure what's on the agenda. I'm sure I'll find something fun to see. I'm a big explorer when I travel. Here's a look back at my last two trips to NOLA.

No White Flags

I chose to forgo the Ice Bucket Challenge over the past few months for a few reasons. One being that the drought in California is so bad that we can't afford to waste any water, like at all. Another is I felt a lot of people participating were only doing it because it was the cool thing to do and celebrities were in on it. Having worked to produce non-profit charitable events for five years I appreciate the campaign so much! It was genius and spread a lot of awareness which is a really wonderful thing. But while I applaud what the Challenge accomplished, it was also frustrating that a lot of people were all about the popularity and didn't donate.

Before I get attacked - because I know a lot of bloggers participated - I want to iterate that I am not putting anyone down who accepted the Challenge. I am only expressing my disappointment that some didn't take the time to think about ALS and what the buzz was actually about. I am pro anything for a good cause!

Team Gleason - No White Flags

Although I didn't participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge, I did support through a cause that's important to me - Team Gleason. It's a campaign that I've been following for years. A former New Orleans Saints player, Steve Gleason is a symbol of the city's rebirth after Hurricane Katrina. The first game back in the Superdome, Gleason blocked a kick proving New Orleans could bounce back. In 2011, a few years after that monumental play, he was diagnosed with ALS. Since then, Gleason and has been an inspiration to many. You don't have to be a Saints fan, or even into football, to necessarily know about him. Gleason has been featured on A Football Life (a very good look into his life with ALS), and was in a Microsoft commercial (also cool if you can spare a minute to watch) played during last year's Super Bowl, showing how those living with this terrible disease can do so much thanks to technology.

Team Gleason's motto of never giving up can be applied to anything in life - no white flags!

Team Gleason - No White Flags Tank

Thanks to the Ice Bucket Challenge, the light shed on this terrible disease has been amazing! But don't forget it's more than a fad, you should support causes YOU are passionate about. Donate where you feel is best. There are so many worthy causes.

If you do want to support this specific cause, consider ordering some Team Gleason merch. Proceeds go toward helping those with ALS and spreading awareness. I have the tank pictured above, displaying Gleason's famous punt block. Be aware that sizes run small.

2013 was pretty shitty. It def ranks up there with one of my least favorite years ever. It was one thing after another every month. In fact, I've been out of commission (hurt myself at bootcamp) since Thursday and have been in bed all weekend. BUT, that being said, there were also rays of sunshine that I am so lucky to have experienced! Here are my top five highlights of 2013 in no particular order...

New Orleans
Father-daughter trip to NOLA to see my beloved Saints play in the Superdome. It was epic!

30th Birthday
Celebrated at a Hollywood speakeasy with my closest friends and family + a trip to Sin City.

Seattle
Christina graciously hosted me for several days of exploration and serious Emerald City fun.

Justin Timberlake
Not one, but TWO, JT concerts with Kate! One of which was in Vegas.

Friends
I cut some bad ones, re-connected with old ones, and appreciated the best ones.

Things to Do in NOLA

Today I'm recapping the activities from my New Orleans trip last week. I'd been to NOLA before but this was my dad's first time so we did all of the touristy stuff including eating lots of local food, swamp, haunted French Quarter, and Garden District tours, and sightseeing. Here's some info about the tours and hotel, in case you're visiting NOLA:

Swamp Tour- Airboat Adventures, $80 per person with coupon found on the New Orleans city site. Included hotel pick-up and drop-off and an hour and a half tour on a small 6-person boat. A gator literally climbed onto our boat, that's how up close and personal it was.

Haunted French Quarter Tour- Witches Brew 4-in-1 Walking Tour, two hour tour through the Quarter with stories of ghosts, vampires, witches, and voodoo. I love these types of tours because you get a lot of history with the creepy tales.

Garden District Walking Tour- Booked through a travel guide, didn't get the tour company name. It was a wonderful private tour for only $15 per person. Highlights included architecture, celebrity homes, and a walk through the Lafayette Cemetery #1.

Hotel- The Saint, located at 931 Canal Street, it was close to the Superdome, Bourbon Street, and a streetcar away from the Garden District. The lobby had cool details and the halls had dark blue lighting. It was a hip hotel different from the typical chain ambiance.

I'm no expert, but if you're traveling to New Orleans feel free to ask me for any recommendations and I'm happy to help!
